‖ pteropus Zool.|pt-, ˈtɛrəpəs| Pl. -i. Also in anglicized form ˈpterope |-əʊp|. [mod.L., ad. Gr. πτερόπους wing-footed.] A genus of tropical and sub-tropical bats having membranous wings, known as flying foxes or fruit-bats; an animal of this genus. Hence ˈpteropid, ˈpteropine adjs., belonging to or having the characteristics of the Pteropidæ or flying-fox family.
