pseudoˈbreccia Geol. Also with hyphen. [f. pseudo- + breccia.] A limestone in which partial and irregular dolomitization has produced a texture similar to that of a breccia. So pseudoˈbrecciated a.; ˌpseudobrecciˈation, the structure or state of a pseudobreccia.
1907A. Strahan et al. Geol. S. Wales Coal-Field VIII. (Mem. Geol. Survey No. 247) 10 Mr. [R. H.] Tiddeman notes that some of the limestones of Mumbles Head..and Oxwich exhibit pitted bedding-surfaces and a pseudo-brecciated structure. Ibid., The structure referred to as pseudo-brecciation gives the rock the appearance of having been crushed into small angular fragments and re-cemented. Ibid. 12 In Callencroft Quarry a pseudo-breccia..is exposed, but dolomitisation appears to have taken place along a fault also. 1913Jrnl. Geol. XXI. 407 That this is actually a case of pseudobrecciation, and not a brecciated structure due to the cementation of a dolomite breccia in a calcareous matrix, is evident from a microscopical examination. 1963D. W. & E. E. Humphries tr. Termier's Erosion & Sedimentation XIV. 301 This bed is a pseudo-brecciated layer of Early Malm (Late Jurassic) age. Ibid., The compaction of the sediment was due to migration of ‘imbibed’ water... This compaction is probably associated with the pseudo-brecciation. 1969Bennison & Wright Geol. Hist. Brit. Isles ix. 189 The limestones of the D Zone are oolitic or rubbly with pseudobreccias and are highly fossiliferous. |
