† bartaˈvel Obs. rare—1. [a. F. bartavelle, a name given, according to Lavallée, on account of the bird's monotonous note, f. med.L. bartavella for vertevella (cf. Pr. bartaveo) windlass, f. vertĕre to turn.] The Red Partridge.
