rooi-els S. Afr.|ˈrɔɪels| Also rood(e) els, elze. [Afrikaans, f. rooi red + els alder.] An evergreen tree, Cunonia capensis, belonging to the family Cunoniaceæ, native to southern Africa, and bearing compound leaves and racemes of fragrant cream flowers; also, the reddish wood of this tree.
