An evergreen tree, Cunonia capensis, belonging to the family Cunoniaceæ, native to southern Africa, and bearing compound leaves and racemes of fragrant cream flowers; also, the reddish wood of this tree. Cf. red alder, red els s.v. red a. 17 d.
