A. adj. Of animals: Having a coat in which the prevailing colour is thickly interspersed with some other; esp. bay, sorrel, or chestnut mixed with white or grey. Also absol. as the name of a colour.
a. Of horses. (Cf. roaned.)
The prevailing colour is freq. expressed, as black roan, blue roan, red roan, silver roan, strawberry roan.
