azarole Bot.|ˈæzərəʊl| Forms: 7 azeroll, 8 azerole, 7–9 azarole. [a. F. azerole (written by Tournefort azarole), cogn. with Sp. acerolo, azarolla, Pg. azerola, It. azzeruola, ad. Arab. az-zuﻋrūr, applied to the same fruit.] The fruit of the Neapolitan Medlar, a species of hawthorn (Cratægus azarolus); also applied to the tree itself, sometimes called, after Fr., azerolier.
