Provins|prɔvɛ̃s| The name of a French town, thirty miles east of Melun, used attrib. to designate a variety of Rosa gallica, formerly known as Rosa provincialis, the apothecary's red rose, which has long been cultivated there. Cf. province rose s.v. province 10.
