avocet, -set|ˈævəʊˌsɛt| Also 7–8 avosetta, 9 avocetta. [a. F. avocette, ad. It. avosetta.] One of the Wading birds (Grallatores), allied to the Snipes and Stilts, specially distinguished by its flexible upturned beak.
