auxochrome|ˈɔːksəʊkrəʊm| [G. (O. N. Witt 1888, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. XXI. i. 325), f. Gr. αὔξ-ειν to increase + -o + χρῶµα colour.] Any salt-forming group that, when combined with a chromogen, produces a dyestuff. Hence auxochromic |-ˈkrəʊmɪk|, auxochromous |-ˈkrəʊməs|, adjs., defining such groups.

These Witt terms auxochromous groups. 1953J. Ramsbottom Mushrooms & Toadstools ix. 102 Other groups ({b1}OH, {b1}OCH3, {b1}CO2H, NH2), known as auxochromes, modify this basal colour in various ways. |
