1937F. W. Galpin Textbk. Europ. Mus. Instr. 27 The various sound-producers were classed as Autophones or self-vibrators. Ibid. 52 The representative instrument in the plucked type of Autophones is the Crembalum or Jew's-harp. 1954Grove's Dict. Mus.
