Atlantosaurus Palæont.|ætˌlæntəˈsɔːrəs| [mod.L., f. Gr. ἄτλας, -αντος (see Atlas n.1) + -o- + σαῦρος lizard.] An extinct genus of huge dinosaurian reptiles of the sub-order Sauropoda; also, a reptile of this genus.
1877O. C. Marsh in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. XIV. 514 The gigantic Dinosaur, Atlantosaurus montanus..is..from the upper Jurassic... It is the representative of a distinct family, which may be called Atlantosauridæ. In the type genus, Atlantosaurus, one of the most important characters is the pneumaticity of the vertebræ. 1882Cliftonian Nov. 289 We have seen what gigantic representatives of the race this Atlantosaurus, and even our Iguanodon were. 1884J.
