ribulose Biochem.|ˈraɪbjʊləʊz, -s| [f. ribose + -ulose2.] A ketopentose sugar which in the form of phosphate esters is an important intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism and photosynthesis.
1936Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CXV. 731 The formation of d- and l-ribulose from d- and l-arabinose respectively has been demonstrated. Ibid. 747 Five portions (75 gm. each) of l-arabinose, treated with pyridine.., gave a total of some 100 gm. of crude ribulose. 1959I. L. Finar Org. Chem. (ed. 3) I. xviii. 433 Two monosaccharides, ribulose and sedoheptulose, play an essential part in the photosynthesis of carbohydrates. 1959A. White et al. Princ. Biochem. (ed. 2) xviii. 417 Were all the 3-phosphoglyceric acid converted to hexose by reversal of glycolysis,..no ribulose diphosphate would be available to serve as acceptor for CO2 in subsequent fixation reactions. 1976Nature 27 May 344/2 It is easy to formulate schemes for the synthesis of 2′-amino-2′-deoxyribose from ribose or ribulose and ammonia..but we have been unable to obtain appreciable yields of the amino sugars in this way. |
