‖ protome|ˈprɒtəmiː| [mod.L., a. Gr. προτοµή the foremost or upper part of anything, a bust or half-figure, f. προτέµν-ειν to cut off in front; cf. τοµή cutting.] A bust. Now spec. the forepart of an animal represented decoratively, as in (ancient) sculpture.
