Gr. ῥύγχ-ος snout + ὁδαῖον, neut. of ὁδαῖος that is on or by the way (f. ὁδός way).] The cavity anterior to and partially containing the proboscis of certain invertebrates, esp. ribbon-worms of the phylum Nemertea and gastropods of the genus Buccinum. Hence rhynchoˈdæal a.
1894Jrnl. R. Microsc. Soc. 328 Oswald proposes to call the space between the introvert or proboscis [of certain gastropods] and its sheath the rhynchodæum, its anterior opening the rhynchostome, the opening at the apex of the proboscis the pharyngostome, and the oral aperture proper, where ectoderm joins the endoderm, the gastrostome. 1912Mem. Liverpool Marine Biol. Comm. XX. 30 The cavity (part of the external world) between the proboscis and its sheath..is known as the Rhynchodaeum, and the opening of the latter, or the false mouth, is the Rhynchostome. 1963R. D. Barnes Invertebr. Zool. viii. 119/2 The lumen of the rhynchodaeum is continuous with that of the proboscis proper. 1972R. Gibson Nemerteans i. 38 The proboscis pore opens immediately into the rhynchodaeum, a rather short tubular chamber that in many pelagic hoplonemerteans is very short. Ibid., Rhynchodaeal musculature, if present, is usually weak and predominantly composed of circular fibres. 1975Zeitschr. f. Morphol. der Tiere LXXX. 67 In O[enopota] levidensis the rhynchodaeal walls have a series of annular folds, whose musculature appears to allow dilation and contraction. The dilation could enlarge the rhynchodaeal space, conceivably of assistance in prey capture and engulfment. |
