protoanemonin Chem.|prəʊtəʊəˈnɛmənɪn| [Coined in Japanese as purotoanemonin (Asahina & Fujita 1920, in Jrnl. Pharmaceut. Soc. Japan XL. 3): see proto- and anemonin (cf. quot. 1920).] A poisonous, vesicant, pale yellow oil, which is isolated from many plants of the family Ranunculaceæ, and is an unsaturated lactone, CH2{b2}C·CH{b2}CH·CO·O, having bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties.
1920Chem. Abstr. XIV. 1384 The sharp, oily substance volatile with steam obtained from Ranunculus scleratus L., consists in the main of the mother substance of anemonin, and has been given the name protoanemonin, which under spontaneous union of 2 mols. passes into anemonin. 1949H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics I. xiv. 605 Protoanemonin (C5H4O2) was obtained as a pale yellow irritating oil. It solidified to give anemonin within a few hours at room temperature but was stable at 5°C. in 1 per cent. aqueous solution. 1958New Biol. XXVI. 44 All three species [of buttercup] contain a glycoside ‘ranunculin’ which is readily broken down in damaged tissues to give glucose and an unsaturated lactone—protoanemonin. This lactone is poisonous and blistering, and makes R. bulbosus and R. acris very unpalatable to stock. 1972Science 5 May 512/2 Lesser in toxicity are the vitamin antagonists such as protoanemonin..and amino acid antagonists such as mimosine. |
