Art & Artists 271 Retroussage is a term used in etching to describe the action of passing a ball of muslin lightly over an inked plate with the intention of dragging some of the ink out of the lines and smearing it across the plate. 1965Zigrosser & Gaehde Guide to Collecting Orig. Prints iv. 45 For etchings a little ink is often left on the plate, giving the print a slight tone instead of a dead white, and with a cloth the ink is drawn up slightly out of the lines in an operation known as retroussage. |
