prostaglandin Biochem.|prɒstəˈglændɪn| [a. G. prostaglandin (U. S. von Euler 1935, in Klin. Wochenschr. 17 Aug. 1183/1), f. G. prosta(ta or Eng. prostate n. (a.) + gland2 + -in1.] Any of a group of closely related unsaturated, oxygenated, cyclic fatty acids which occur in seminal fluid and many tissues in male and female mammals and have numerous marked physiological effects (notably the contraction of smooth muscle, esp. that of the uterus).
