preˈload, v. [pre- A. 1.] trans. To load beforehand; spec. in Engineering, to design or make (a bearing or machine part) in such a way that there are internal loads independent of any working load (e.g. to reduce noise in operation).
1945R. K. Allan Rolling Bearings x. 253 Another method..is to preload the bearings by axial adjustment. 1950O. J. Horger in M. Hetényi Handbk. Exper. Stress Analysis xi. 556 Seeger investigated the fatigue resistance of hollow shafts which were preloaded axially so as to produce compressive prestress below yield-strength value of the steel. 1952C. H. Dix Seismic Profiling for Oil iii. 44 In some cases it is desirable to drill several shot holes, preload each one of them, and not plan to reshoot any of them. 1969W. Wrigley et al. Gyroscopic Theory xiv. 324 When two ball bearings are preloaded against each other, the result is a much stiffer assembly. 1969Jane's Freight Containers 1968–69 439 (caption) They are pre-loaded and sealed by shippers. 1936Brit. Pat. 471,989, The object of our invention is to provide improved brake-operating mechanism which permits a pre-loaded spring to be used in conjunction with compensation between the brakes on the front and rear wheels of a vehicle for normal braking. 1941Automobile Engineer XXXI. 180/3 Owing to the substantial design of the housing it has not been found necessary to employ pre-loading of the bearings. 1945R. K. Allan Rolling Bearings x. 235 The primary object of preloading is to eliminate..radial and/or axial movements in a bearing when it is functioning in a machine. 1962John o' London's 22 Feb. 182/2 The dice are, as it were, already pre-loaded. 1969W. Wrigley et al. Gyroscopic Theory xiv. 324 Under the preloaded condition, the pair of bearings have axial and radial stiffnesses vs. load which are very nearly constant. 1971B. Scharf Engin. & its Lang. xii. 137 Pre⁓loading is frequently used in high precision work and in order to ensure noiseless running. 1976Attewell & Farmer Princ. Engin. Geol. xi. 826 Any pre-loading or the application of consolidation pressure must..start with the condition that the initial stresses applied to the soil are less than the existing shear strength of the soil. |
