A colourless odourless gas occurring in very small quantity (less than 1 per cent.) in the air, used in ‘gas-filled’ electric light bulbs, etc. Discovered in 1894 and named from its chemical inertness. Symbol Ar, atomic number 18, atomic weight 39·944.
