porokeratosis Path.|ˌpɒrəʊ-, ˌpɔərəʊkɛrəˈtəʊsɪs| [mod.L., ad. It. porocheratosi (V. Mibelli 1893, in Giorn. Ital. delle Malattie Veneree XXVIII. 340), f. Gr. πόρο-ς pore n.1: see keratosis s.v. kerato-.] A skin disease in which the lesions are annular horny ridges enclosing an atrophic area and (in the rare classic form of the disease) usu. occur early in life on the hands and feet.
1893tr. V. Mibelli in P. G. Unna et al. Internationaler Atlas Seltener Hautkrankenheiten xxvii. (1) 10/2 As regards the microscopic examination the case presents itself as a pathological fact sui generis, inasmuch as the principal alteration consists in hyperkeratosis of the sudoriferous ducts; and it is on this account that it deserves to be considered apart under the designation of ‘Porokeratosis’ which I propose provisionally as it has the merit of indicating clearly the anatomo-pathological significance of the alteration itself. 1899Allbutt's Syst. Med. VIII. 478 In connection with these ringed nodules of the hands the peculiar disease known as Porokeratosis should be mentioned. 1943Arch. Dermatol. & Syphilol. XLVII. 2 The extension of a lesion of porokeratosis is usually centrifugal, slow and insidious in onset, leaving a somewhat atrophic area in the center free of hair and glandular structures. 1960J. Marshall Dis. Skin xxix. 777 Porokeratosis is a misnomer as the lesions are not, as Mibelli believed, related to sweat pores. 1967Arch. Dermatol. XCVI. 611/1 This study of 31 patients presents disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) as a distinctive and recognizable entity characterized by many uniformly small, minimal, annular, anhidrotic, keratotic lesions developing during the third or fourth decade of life on sun-exposed areas of skin. 1973Internat. Jrnl. Dermatol. XII. 152/1 Our recent studies indicate that disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) is a distinct entity which differs in many aspects from classic porokeratosis described by Mibelli and by Respighi. Hence ˌporokeraˈtotic a.
1943Arch. Dermatol. & Syphilol. XLVII. 14 This consideration excludes the necessity of calling the lesion a nevus, in spite of the strong tendency of porokeratotic lesions to arrange themselves in linear and systematized configuration. 1972Brit. Jrnl. Plastic Surg. XXV. 325 The tumours in both our cases were multifocal, and appeared to have arisen in the atrophic zone of the Porokeratotic lesion. |
