pompilid, n. and a. Zool.|ˈpɒmpɪlɪd| Also Pompilid. [ad. mod.L. family name Pompiliidæ, f. the generic name Pompilius (J. C. Fabricius Supplementum Entomologiæ Systematicæ (1798) 212), f. Gr. ποµπίλ-ος a fish which followed ships + -id3.] A. n. A predatory fossorial wasp belonging to the family Pompiliidæ. B. adj. Of or pertaining to this group of insects.
