polyporic, a. Biochem.|pɒˈlɪpərɪk| [tr. G. polyporsäure polyporic acid (C. Stahlschmidt 1877, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. CLXXXVII. 180), f. mod.L. polypor-us (see prec.) + -ic.] polyporic acid: a bronze-coloured crystalline solid, 3, 6-dihydroxy-2, 5-diphenyl-p-benzoquinone, C18H12O4, which is a colouring matter found in certain fungi and lichens, and was first isolated from a fungus of the genus Polyporus.
1877Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XXXII. ii. 620 The fungus..seems to be closely allied to Polyporus purpurascens... When brought into contact with dilute ammonia, its colour changes to a fine deep violet, and it yields a solution from which hydrochloric acid throws down a yellow precipitate of the new acid—polyporic acid. 1931Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LIII. 2373 Two of the important coloring matters found in fungi are polyporic acid..obtained from Polyporous [sic] nidulans and atromentin..from Paxillus atrotomentosus. 1957R. H. Thomson Naturally occurring Quinones ii. 26 Polyporic acid also occurs in the fungus Peniophora filamentosa..and..has been found in two lichens. 1967M. E. Hale Biol. Lichens viii. 106 Polyporic acid is known from Sticta coronata and Polyporus nidulans. |
