‖ ˌpolioencephaˈlitis Path. Also poliencephalitis. [mod.L., f. Gr. πολιός grey + ἐγκέϕαλος brain + -itis; first formed in Ger. (C. Wernicke Lehrb. d. Gehirnkrankheiten (1881) II. ii. 229). The form poliencephalitis is more correctly formed, but has been superseded in modern use by polio-.] Inflammation of the grey matter of the brain.
