Poggendorff|ˈpɒgəndɔːf| [Name of J. C. Poggendorff (1796–1877), German physicist and chemist, who pointed out the illusion (see Ann. der Physik und Chem. (1860) CX. 502).] Poggendorff illusion: an optical illusion in which the two ends of a straight line whose central portion is obscured by a rectangular strip crossing at an angle seem not to be in line.
1898Psychol. Rev. V. 540 The Poggendorff illusion... This illusion is due to the fact that the two ends of the transversal, sundered by the vertical strip, are made to belong to two different systems, each suggesting its own perspective interpretation and being under no necessity..of appearing as parts of a continuous line. 1976Nature 1 Apr. 397/2 (caption) The Poggendorff illusion in geological contexts; the illusory perceptual data are more likely to mislead when they favour an investigator's geological hypothesis than when they do not. |
