podargus Ornith.|pəˈdɑːgəs| [mod.L. (L. J. P. Vieillot in Nouveau Dict. Hist. Nat. (ed. 2, 1818) XXVII. 151), f. Gr. πόδαργος swift-footed.] A nocturnal, greyish-brown bird of the genus so called, belonging to the family Podargidæ and found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands; esp. the Australian tawny frogmouth, Podargus strigoides. Cf. frog-mouth, frog's mouth 2.
