plinthite Min.|ˈplɪnθaɪt| [Named by T. Thomson 1836, f. Gr. πλίνθος brick + -ite1.] A brick-red clay occurring among the trap rocks of Antrim and the Hebrides.
1836T. Thomson Min. I. 323 Sp. 8 Plinthite. I give this name to a mineral which occurs in the County of Antrim, from its brick red colour. 1843Portlock Geol. 217 Plinthite is not an uncommon mineral, occurring in the softer varieties of the trap rocks. 1883Athenæum 30 June 833/3 Saponite, plinthite, Thomsonite..were found [near Stainchol, Skye]. |
