1. Chem. A salt derived from platinous oxide, in which platinum has its lower valency.
1866Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 671 Platinous Oxide..when recently precipitated..dissolves in potash and in soda, forming salts called platinites, which appear also to be formed when metallic platinum is heated with caustic alkalis. 1878Abney Photogr. (1881) 157 A solution of ‘chloroplatinite’ of potassium.
2. Metallurgy. Also Platinite. An alloy of iron with 42 to 50 per cent nickel which has the same coefficient of expansion as platinum and has supplanted that metal in various electrical applications, esp. for metal-to-glass contacts in lamps.
1918Nature 15 Aug. 471/1 The Germans..have found that for certain purposes an alloy of nickel and iron may replace platinum. The alloy—called ‘platinite’—may be used in electric lamps. 1923Engineering 23 Nov. 651/3 The iron-nickel alloy known as ‘Platinite’, containing 46 per cent. of nickel and about 0·15 per cent. of carbon, had practically the same coefficient of expansion as glass. 1929[see elinvar]. 1965A.
