1. Chem. A salt derived from platinous oxide, in which platinum has its lower valency.
1866Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 671 Platinous Oxide..when recently precipitated..dissolves in potash and in soda, forming salts called platinites, which appear also to be formed when metallic platinum is heated with caustic alkalis.1878Abney Photogr. 2. Metallurgy. Also Platinite. An alloy of iron with 42 to 50 per cent nickel which has the same coefficient of expansion as platinum and has supplanted that metal in various electrical applications, esp. for metal-to-glass contacts in lamps.
