plasmagel Biol.|ˈplæzmədʒɛl| Also plasma gel. [f. plasma + gel n.] Gelatinous cytoplasm, such as surrounds the plasmasol in an amœboid cell. Cf. plasmasol.
1923S. O. Mast in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. IX. 258 By careful observations on Amœba proteus in motion the following structures can clearly be differentiated: (1) A central elongated fluid portion; (2) A solid layer surrounding the fluid portion; (3) A very thin elastic surface layer or membrane. The first I shall designate the plasmasol, the second the plasmagel and the third the plasmalemma. 1939W. B. Yapp Introd. Animal Physiol. iv. 131 Amœba consists of three layers. On the outside there is a thin plasmalemma, which can be lifted off with needles and is of a dough-like consistency. Inside this is the plasmagel, which is solid, and includes the classical ectoplasm and some endoplasm; inside this again is liquid plasmasol. 1942G. H. Bourne Cytol. & Cell Physiol. iii. 97 Streaming in [the aquatic plant] Elodea cells is associated with gelation, and..is abolished by application of sufficient hydro⁓static pressure to liquefy the cortical plasmagel. 1970Ambrose & Easty Cell Biol. xi. 360 The plasma gel is located near the plasma membrane; it is generally free from granules and other inclusions. 1973N. Adresen in K. W. Jeon Biol. of Amœba iv. 102 The large pseudopodia..may contain several parallel streams of plasmasol, each running in its own tube of plasmagel. |
