[mod.L., f. L. Pīeris a Muse, f. Pīeria (see Pierian a.).]
1. [Adopted by D. Don 1834, in Edin. New Philos. Jrnl. XVII. 159.] An evergreen shrub of the genus so called, belonging to the family Ericaceæ, native to the southern United States, China, and Japan, and bearing panicles of small, bell-shaped white flowers.
