phæism Biol.|ˈfiːɪz(ə)m| [f. Gr. ϕαι-ός dusky + -ism.] A dusky or dark variety of coloration, which falls short of melanism.
1891Athenæum 12 Dec. 804/3 Mr. Jenner-Weir exhibited two dark specimens of Zygæna minos..[he] expressed an opinion that the specimens were not representatives of complete melanism, and suggested that the word ‘phæism’..would be a correct word to apply to this and similar departures from the normal coloration of a species. 1899Cambr.
