phytophthora|faɪˈtɒfθərə| [mod.L., f. phyto- + Gr. ϕθορά destruction.] A fungus of the genus so called, belonging to the order Peronosporales and including several parasitic species which damage plants, esp. Phytophthora infestans, the cause of potato blight. Also attrib.
