† phthore Obs. Chem. [a. F. phthore, ad. Gr. ϕθορά destruction, f. ϕθείρ-ειν to destroy, corrupt.] Old name for the element fluorine, because of the corrosive action of hydrofluoric acid. Hence † ˈphthoric a., fluoric; † ˈphthorine, fluorine.
