phrontist rare.|ˈfrɒntɪst| [ad. Gr. ϕροντιστής a deep thinker (Aristoph. Nub. 267), f. ϕροντίζειν to be thoughtful, f. ϕροντίς thought.] One who is devoted to meditation and study; a deep thinker: by Aristophanes ironically applied to Socrates.
1822T. Mitchell Comm. Aristoph. II. 18 Wieland is led to conclude, that before Aristophanes applied the term phrontist to Socrates and his friends, the word itself was not in common use. |
