Abounding in phosphorus; spec. applied to compounds into which phosphorus enters in its lower valency (trivalent), as opp. to phosphoric; esp. in phosphorous acid = trihydrogen phosphite, H3PO3 = P(OH)3, obtained from phosphorus, usually in the form of a thick uncrystallizable syrup, but also in crystalline form. phosphorous anhydride = phosphorus trioxide, P2O3, a white non-crystalline powder, produced by the slow combustion of phosphorus in the air; phosphorous chloride = p. trichloride, PCl3, a colourless strongly fuming liquid.
