phenylalanine Biochem.|ˈfɛnɪl-, fiːnaɪlˈæləniːn| [ad. G. phenylalanin (Erlenmeyer & Lipp 1883, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. CCXIX. 186), f. phenyl phenyl + alanin alanine.] A colourless, crystalline amino-acid, C6H5CH2·CH(NH2)COOH, which, in its lævorotatory form, is widely distributed in plant proteins and is an essential constituent of the human diet.
