phainopepla, n. Ornith.|ˌfaɪnəʊˈpɛplə| [a. mod.L. Phainopepla, f. Gr. ϕαεινός shining, radiant + πέπλα robes.] A crested silky flycatcher, Phainopepla nitens, which is found in scrubland in south-western North America, and has red eyes and (in the mature male) glossy black plumage with white wing patches or (in the female and juvenile forms) brownish-grey plumage.
