a. Applied to the petrous portion of the temporal bone (petrosal bone, med.L. os petrōsum), and parts belonging to or connected with it; and to some branches derived from the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves that pass through the petrosal bone, and to the inferior ganglion of the glossopharyngeal nerve, situated in a notch in this bone.
