Petri|ˈpɛtrɪ, ˈpiːtrɪ| Also petri. [Name of R. J. Petri (1852–1922), German bacteriologist, who first proposed the use of such a dish (Centralbl. f. Bacteriol. und Parasitenkunde (1887) I. 279).] Petri (or † Petri's) dish: a shallow, circular, flat-bottomed glass (or plastic) dish with vertical sides and with a cover of the same shape but slightly larger, which is used particularly for growing cultures of bacteria or the like.
