peseta (pəˈseɪtə, pəˈseːtə, ‖ peˈseta) [Sp., dim. of pesa weight; cf. peso Spanish dollar.] A modern Spanish silver coin, equivalent to the French franc and Italian lira; now (since Oct. 1868) the unit of value in Spain. It is divided into 100 centimos.
