[f. Gr. περί around + πλαστ-ός formed, moulded.]
†a. The intercellular substance or matrix in which the organized structures of a tissue are embedded (obs.).
b. The main substance or body of a cell (esp. of a highly organized cell, as an ovum), as distinct from the external coating or cell-wall and the internal nucleus.
c. A cell-wall or cell-envelope. Hence periˈplastic a., of or pertaining to the periplast.
1853Huxley in Med.-Chirurg. Rev. Oct. 297 To the former..we shall throughout the present article give the name of Periplast, or periplastic substance,..to the latter, that of Endoplast... We regard it as quite certain, that that portion which corresponds with the periplast, forms a continuous whole through the entire plant.
