[a. Gr. περιπέτεια a turn right about, a sudden change, esp. that on which the plot of a tragedy hinges, f. περιπετής, lit. ‘falling round’, f. περί around + stem πετ- of πίπτειν to fall. The form peripety is ad. F. péripétie (Vauquelin, 16th c.).]
A sudden change of fortune or reverse of circumstances (in a tragedy, etc., or, by extension, in the actual course of affairs). Also, according to the theory of Jung, the third stage, culmination, or turning point of a dream.
