ˈpepper-tree
A name given to various trees: cf. pepper n. 3. spec. a. An evergreen tree or shrub of S. America, Schinus Molle (family Anacardiaceæ), having a pungent red fruit; cultivated for ornament in California and Australia; b. Either of two Australasian evergreen trees, Drimys aromatica or Pseudowintera axillaris (horopito), both belonging to the family Magnoliaceæ, and bearing small dark fruits once used as a substitute for pepper.
