penicilloic, a. Biochem.|pɛnɪsɪˈləʊɪk| [f. penicillin + -oic.] penicilloic acid: any of the acids produced when a penicillin is hydrolysed (as by a penicillinase) and the C-N bond of the lactam ring broken.
1945Science 21 Dec. 628/2 The dicarboxylic acid obtained by hydrolysis of penicillin at the site of the potential carboxyl is termed penicilloic acid. This acid is produced in the form of salts by treatment of penicillin with alkalies and is presumably the product of the action of the enzyme penicillinase on penicillin. 1949Mozingo & Folkers in H. T. Clarke et al. Chem. of Penicillin xviii. 542/1 Many of the penicilloic acids..were made in order to study their reactions with various reagents in the interest of their dehydration to the penicillins. 1959Observer 11 Jan. 14/7 It [sc. penicillinase] acts by rapidly breaking down penicillin to penicilloic acid, which has no antibiotic activity. 1970New Eng. Jrnl. Med. 16 July 119/1 Penicilloic acid appears to have an important role in some of the allergic reactions caused by penicillins. Hence peniciˈlloate [-ate1], a salt or ester of a penicilloic acid.
1946Industr. & Engin. Chem. (Analytical Ed.) Oct. 619/1, 8·97 equivalents of iodine per mole..is in reasonably good agreement with the range given..for penicilloates (8·5 to 8·9). 1969Manhas & Bose Synthesis of Penicillin, Cephalosporin C & Analogs iii. 38 When this route..met with only limited success the cyclization of penicilloates that could not form oxazolones was investigated. |
