penicillanic, a. Chem.|pɛnɪsɪˈlænɪk| [f. as prec. + -an- + -ic.] penicillanic acid: an acid, C8H11NO2S, whose molecular structure is the nucleus of the various penicillins and consists of a β-lactam ring fused to a molecule of 5,5-dimethylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid.
1953J. C. Sheehan et al. in Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LXXV. 3293 By a cyclization procedure we have synthesized a β-lactamthiazolidine (VI)... We have chosen to call this compound methyl phthalimidopenicillanate. [Note] As a convenience in naming VI and similar analogs of the penicillins we suggest the terms ‘penam’ and ‘penicillanic acid’ for the following ring system and substituted ring system. 1959Times 27 Oct. 6/7 The new penicillin, which is the potassium salt of 6-(-α-phenoxypropionamido) penicillanic acid, has the same range of antibacterial activity as previous penicillins. 1969Adv. Appl. Microbiol. XI. 26 (heading) Antistaphylococcal activity of 6-substituted penicillanic acid derivatives. |
