pelagite Min.|ˈpɛlədʒaɪt| [f. Gr. πέλαγος sea + -ite1 2 b.] A name given to nodules of oxide of manganese and iron obtained in deep-sea soundings in the Pacific Ocean.
1876A. H. Church in Min. Mag. I. 52 The singularity of the mode of formation, of the occurrence, and of the composition of these concretions should constitute no bar to their recognition as a distinct mineral species under such a name as Pelagite. It would at present be impossible to assign a formula to this ‘pelagite’. |
