A local name for the fruit of the hawthorn; a haw.
1827Hone Every-day Bk. II. 1598 ‘Haws’..in the west are called pegalls or pigalls. 1879Jefferies Wild Life in S. Co. xi. 223 Pigeons feed on the peggles which cover the great hawthorn bush so thickly as to give it a reddish tint.
