1. a. One who, or that which, pecks; a bird that pecks; the second element in various bird-names, as fig-pecker, flower-pecker, nut-pecker; also short for woodpecker.

2. a. An implement for pecking; a kind of hoe.

In the old ‘pecker’ the end of the lever was V-shaped, and its up-and-down motion resembled the pecking of a bird.
