a. The process of obtaining by letters patent the sole right to purchase and sell.
1883Daily News 25 Sept. 3/1 Patenting was unnecessarily and unwisely expensive, and the poor patentee was left almost without any aid or guidance.
b. Metallurgy. In the manufacture of wire, a process for improving ductility similar to normalizing, but involving cooling in either air or molten lead or salt.
