Name of two North American plants, and their fruit: a. Mitchella repens (family Cinchonaceæ), a trailing evergreen herb with edible but insipid scarlet berries; also called partridge(-berry)-vine. b. Gaultheria procumbens (family Ericaceæ), the checker-berry or wintergreen, whose red berries furnish food for partridges and other animals.
