paratone Linguistics.|ˈpærətəʊn| [f. para-1 + tone n. 1.] A postulated tonal unit of a sequence of simple tone-groups, in which information concerning sentence-type, the speaker's attitude, etc. is conveyed. Also attrib. Hence paratoˈnality; paratoˈnicity.
1973A. Fox in Archivum Linguisticum IV. 21 As far as the paratone-group is concerned, we may identify three kinds of choice which parallel exactly those applicable to the tone-group. By the side of tonality we may have ‘paratonality’, which is concerned with the number of paratone-groups in the utterance. Since the position of the major tone-group within the paratone-group is variable, we must also have a ‘paratonicity’ system to locate it..; and parallel to the choice of tone we may have a choice of ‘paratone’, that is, of the specific tone-sequence to be used. |
